Parzania
It ain't a myth that Bollywood flicks have been always found wanting in the faculty of substance and depth, and whenever an idea with a different flavour surfaces, we have a rush of excitement through our veins and we leave no phrase untouched while praising that very sentiment invoked by the work. However, as time passes the sentiment fades away and the passion dies out, all that is left is a faint recognition that "yes .. there was a movie that was different" and we may even watch occassional re-runs .. not for the sentiment but for the occassional comedy, stereotypical dialogues and what not ! Rang de Basanti is a typical case study for this kinda lack of concern or rather hypocritical sense of national pride we are so used to boast of ! :P Trust me, there was a time when I used to get angry at such hypocrites but all I have now is pity for 'em .. coz they are unaware of the sheer ignorance that embodies 'em. It ain't the fault of the director, or the actor, or for that matter even the story writer, but us as the audience to lift a realisation to the height of Mt. Everest and then let it fall with equal carelessness and disregard.
And that is exactly why I was more than impressed by "Parzania" .. it ain't the typical Hindu-Muslim clashes story and it doesn't pretend to instill a sense of hatred for any section, but of course the SOBs of the VHP :P Its the portrayal of the hardship, the suffering, the endless wait, the tiring struggle of a helpless family amidst all this chaos, the telling tale of a frustratingly helpless father, the resolve of a mother whose turmoil never showed on her daughter, and the innocence of a sister - unaware of the unspoken horror that she might never see her brother again. Funnily enough and to my utter satisfaction, once the movie was over nobody spoke ill of the rioters, or curse the Gujrat government, but most of 'em soaked in a much more relevant and significant realisation, that those who suffer are people .. just like you and me .. we sympathise after movies like RDB, Shaheed Bhagat Singh .. but with Parzania .. I empathised .. I could feel .. associate with the ailing father, frantic mother, lost sister .. Guess I realised what the difference between empathy and sympathy was .. something which someone very special had been tryin to get through to me for some time! ;)
I won't say anymore at this juncture, coz I hope that readin through might have at least invoked a slight curioisty to see the movie and cancel plans for other commercial "crap". This ain't the end of my description of the land of Parzania .. where the buildings are made of chocolate .. and the there's ice cream all around .. ;)
BTW Love the title of the movie .. couldn't have thought of a better one myself ! ;)

January 2006, We saw RDB and then there was euphoria of generation awakens. Media got lot of content for filling pages. Many voices joined in against the system. After few months where did these voices fed away, nobody knows. Then in December we saw Lage Raho Munnabhai. A new concept of Gandhigiri came into existence. Gosh, Gandhi himself couldn't ever dreamed of his new age dress up, goggles, caps etc. This also continued for sometime and then subdued.
Here comes Parzania this year. Though as you said it is pretty different from RDB breed of movies. Yes its different. Parzania is one kind of thought provoking movie which makes us think.
There is a category of people who is interested in such kind of movies. Let me first describe the categories of audiences.
There is one niche of audience called MULTIPLEX BUGS( This is not any official term, I am just referring to them by this name). This type of audience is always hungry for different kind of cinema. They want sensible movies. When they see trailors of movies like Parzania, at that time only they decide to watch the movie.
Once such movie is released, most of the time some contoversy is associated with the movie thaT creates some hype, this hype produces substantial inerest in some people for the movie. The niche od such audience is called HYPE BUGS. They are basically driven by the hypes and their curiosity forces them to the TIcket window of halls.
Then there is the most important category of audience called ETERNAL BUGS, unfortunately this category is the least interested in any kind of cinema which is typically called ART movies.
In cities Other than metros and where we have no multiplexes, movies like Parzania don't even find a theatre.
Now I come back to the point.MULTIPLEX BUGS happily go to the theatres to watch the movie in well maintained PVRs or others place like that with pocorn in one hand and Coke in other. They watch movie patiently, some even cry. Once movie is over, some are deeply touched by the movie, whereas others forget what happened in the cinema hall and involve themselves in their shopping acitivities etc.
Some people's temper goes high and it continues for sometime, they talk about movies, discuss issues among friends. With time they involve in other activites and forget about the movie. Movie gets included in their favourites list. Then another movie comes and this cycle goes on like this.
This was all about the so called impact of watching cinemas. Now let me come to the most important point:
We all hear that violance or riot occurred due to vested interests of some political party or terrorists. But in my opinion its not true.
what do these people do to instigate people. They play with their sentiments, they initiate the things and then the rest of the things is done by the people itself. My question is why do they get success
in influencing people? Why do people follow what they are being asked to do? Ok let's take it this way if someone comes to you and ask you to give him all the things and money you have, would you give? Definitely not, coz you know that his demand is illegitimate.
Actually its people's MENTALITY which is responsilbe, and when I say people, it includes everyone. In our conscious mind we are bugged. In our deep rooted beliefs we differentiate ourselves from people in many ways. Hindu from muslims, General category from SC, ST. Indian from American. Rich from Poor and so on.
And its prevalent in our country. Suppose a muslim comes in sbd's neighbourhood, we then become conscious and in our heart they know that somehow they are different from them. Similiar things occur between North Indian, south Indian etc.
All in all we are everyone( A hindu, a muslim, Delhite, Mumbaiya, Punjabi, Gujju, Kundu, Maddu) but Indian.
From our childhood we are brought up in a environment that we forget what we are. We get labelled from birth itself.
And till the time we would remain divided, these things will keep occuring. And who created these differences our MENTALITY.
Ok, there are some elite class of people who is not biased and treats people differently. These peole usually are MULTIPLEX BUGS.
But which audience is the most affected or participate in malicious activities? Most of them are NEUTRAL BUGS(Third category).
And I don't need to remind that this category is the least interested in ART movies like Parzania. That's why such movies become just a package for winning national and international awards.
Movie is awesome but it ain't going to make any difference. See it, enjoy it, appreciate it.
All I want to say is until and unless such movies don't reach up to people of third Category, its useless. And I don't know when people's mentality would change. There should be some way, which is still to be discovered. Have typed everything very fast and don't have time for spell check, so am sorry for spelling mistakes.
